May 20, 2025—STFM is accepting applications for a task force to support educational scholarship by creating structured mentorship experiences. The position duration is September 2025–December 2027.
The task force will:
- Define the scope and purpose of a family medicine scholarship academy
- Review current academic family medicine mentoring programs and develop strategies to standardize mentorship approaches and training, reduce duplicative efforts, and consolidate and promote opportunities under the Academy umbrella
- Identify gaps in training of mentors and mentees and develop training to fill those gaps
- Identify or develop opportunities for members to receive mentorship in research design, conduct, analysis, and funding
- Create a toolkit with educational resources on research methodology and examples of scholarly work
- Identify or create programming to educate members on evidence-based educational scholarship knowledge and skills, including research methods, survey design, IRB processes, data collection, statistical analysis, and scientific writing
- Strengthen collaborative work with other family medicine organizations (ADFM and NAPCRG) to facilitate scholarship.
The task force will be chaired by STFM Research Committee Chair John Epling, MD, MSEd, professor and vice chair of Research and Population Health at Virginia Tech Carilion
Responsibilities for Task Force Members
Task force members will be expected to attend the following meetings (additional virtual meetings may be added as needed):
- Virtual meeting: Friday, September 26, 2025 (90 minutes); 3–4:30 pm ET/ 2–3:30 pm CT/12–1:30 pm PT
- In-person meeting: November 23, 2025, at NAPCRG Annual Meeting in Atlanta, GA
- Virtual meeting: Wednesday, February 18, 2026 (2 hours) 3–5 pm ET/2–4 pm CT/12–2 pm PT
- Virtual meeting: Wednesday, June 17, 2026 (2 hours) 3–5 pm ET/2–4 pm CT/12–2 pm PT
- In-person meeting: November 22, 2026, at NAPCRG Annual Meeting in Toronto, Canada
- Virtual meeting: February or early March 2027 (2 hours), time TBD
- Virtual meeting: August or September 2027 (2 hours), time TBD
Travel expenses for task force meetings will be reimbursed by STFM. Task force members may have assignments between meetings and will be encouraged to contribute to the dissemination of the resources through presentations and publications.
The ideal task force member will have experience as a mentor or mentee (or both) in a formal research mentoring relationship and should mention that in their overview. Members of NAPCRG, ADFM, and STFM are encouraged to apply.
