The ACGME Family Medicine Program Requirements set an expectation that programs ensure residents demonstrate competence, and the American Board of Family Medicine requires program directors attest to competence of graduating residents.Resident coaching is a critical component of competency-based medical education and developing master adaptive learners. However, residency faculty have received little — if any — training on effective coaching. This 10-month longitudinal program supports meaningful behavior change and integration of coaching skills into day-to-day faculty roles. The design and cadence were developed in consultation with faculty experienced in developmental coaching and adult learning models, balancing feasibility for busy family medicine educators with sufficient longitudinal contact for lasting mindset and behavior change. The program's time commitment includes: 10 total hours of asynchronous learning (ideally completed prior to the program start at the STFM Annual Spring Conference), 6 hours of in-person learning at the conference, and 2 hours of learning a month for 10 months following the conference. The program includes:
- Five webinars + five online, interactive vignettes
- A 6-hour training session at the STFM Annual Spring Conference
- Monthly mentor-coaching sessions co-facilitated by one performance and one developmental coach
- Five supervisory group sessions led by developmental coaches
- Five 1:1 group coaching sessions
- Self-reflective exercise
- Submission of a coaching encounter for review and feedback
- Virtual mid-program meeting with other trainees
- Pre- and post-knowledge assessments
- Dissemination of learned principles
