Angelica's Family Medicine Story

My name is Angelica Mendez, a medical student at the University of Southern California.

What Was Your Path Into Medical School?

My path to medical school included attending community college for my first 2 years while working full-time and transferring to the University of Illinois at Chicago to complete my bachelors degree in molecular, cellular, and organismal biology (MCOB). I also minored in sociology with a concentration in race which made my undergraduate curriculum feel well-rounded with diverse learning!

What Do You Do When You Are Not Studying?

When I'm not studying, I love exploring Los Angeles with friends. I enjoy trying new coffee shops, brunch, hiking, and the beach!

How Will This Scholarship and Getting to Attend the STFM Conference on Medical Student Education Impact You?

This scholarship was an honor to receive because I've always had long-term aspirations of participating in medical education. This scholarship will help connect me to a like-minded network of people with goals of furthering medical education, especially within the lens of primary care.

What Do You See Affecting Your Decision on Whether or Not to Go Into Family Medicine or Academic Family Medicine?

Academic family medicine will fulfill my goals of having an intersectional role in medicine. I know the path ahead will keep me busy, but I look forward to embracing new opportunities and discerning which roles align best with my future.
