Direct Observation: What Is It and How to Effectively Perform It.
The purpose of residency education is to train physicians to care effectively for patients. Though resource intensive, direct observation (DO) is a terrific tool for formative and summative feedback that is part of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) toolbox for evaluation. DO involves carefully and purposefully watching and listening to a resident work through a patient encounter. New Login Scheme Coming to STFM.org.
STFM will be implementing a new more user-friendly login scheme on the STFM Web site. STFM members will be notified, via e-mail on August 15, 2011, of this change with instructions on how to log in and set a new password. Once the user's account is set up, the user will be able to log in with a username/password combination and will not be required to remember their STFM Account ID. Additional benefits for users will be the ability to reset your password when needed and  stronger personal data security.

Five STFM Members Participate in the 2011-2012 Grant Generating Project Fellowship.
Grant Generating Project (GGP) scholars participate in a year-long program based at Virginia Commonwealth University designed to provide increased research capacity in securing competitive funding for grants and contracts in the discipline of family medicine. To date, GGP alumni have reported more than $336 million in funded grants as either principal investigators, coinvestigators, or in other significant roles, since participating in the program.
