STFM Member Jeffrey Susman, MD, Named Dean at NEOUCOM
Jeffrey Susman, MD, has been named dean of the Northeastern Ohio Universities Colleges of Medicine and Pharmacy (NEOUCOM). He is currently chair of the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Cincinnati, where he has been since 1999.

Within STFM, Dr Susman has served in many capacities. He served as a member-at-large on the STFM Board of Directors from 2003-2006. He was an active member of several task forces and committees through his longstanding membership within STFM, such as the Future of Family Medicine Task Force, the Faculty Futures Initiative, and the Special Committee on Clinical Policies. He has been involved in many of the STFM groups, including the Group on Faculty Development, serving as group chair from 1993-1996. He is well-published in his field and is the current editor-in-chief of the Journal of Family Practice.

Dr Susman is also a 2008-2009 Bishop Fellow. Administered by the STFM Foundation, The Bishop Fellowship Program prepares senior family medicine faculty to assume positions of greater responsibility in academic medicine and health care leadership. Dr Susman becomes the second Bishop Fellow to achieve a dean's position, and the first one to lead a medical school. Richard Clover, MD, a Bishop Fellow in 2001-2002, became dean of the School of Public Health and Information Sciences at the University of Louisville in 2002.

Congratulations to Dr Susman as he begins his new responsibilities at NEOUCOM effective September 7, 2010.

CHFM Obtains G. Gayle Stephens Collection
The Center for the History of Family Medicine (CHFM) has obtained a significant new donation in the form of the papers of G. Gayle Stephens, MD.

Widely regarded as one of the pioneering leaders in the specialty, Dr Stephens was the founding director of one of the nation’s first family medicine residency programs in Wichita, Kansas, and was instrumental in the formation of a residency program at the University of Alabama in Huntsville.
A prolific writer and recognized scholar in the specialty, Dr Stephens’ 1982 book The Intellectual Basis of Family Medicine has been hailed by many as one of the most influential works on family medicine ever written.

The collection, a generous gift to CHFM from Dr Stephens, is one of the most significant major collections from a past leader in the specialty to be donated to the Center in its more than two decades of operation. The Collection includes materials relating to Dr Stephens’ career and service in family medicine, and includes correspondence and professional papers, published and unpublished works, speeches, awards, and other materials.
