One of the strongest features
of the Society is the opportunity members have to work with others to address
their special interests. By participating in a wide variety of committees, task
forces, and groups, STFM members can effect changes in an ever-growing number
of areas.
STFM groups define an ongoing interest group of members that
work toward specific goals. Groups allow members to address special areas of
interest and develop curricula, monographs, meetings, and networks. Membership
is open to all STFM members.
For more information, contact STFM at 800-274-2237, ext.
5402, kfrank@stfm.org.

the Challenging Learner Teaching interactions with challenging learners is common at the predoctoral and residency level. Approximately 3% of medical students meet criteria for a learning disability and 7-15% of residents experience academic difficulty. Assessing and remediating these learners consumes considerable, financial, and emotional resources not only for the learner but also for faculty and peers. Nationally, there are few programs designed to assess and remediate the challenging learner. The STFM Group on the Challenging Learner provides an organized forum for collating and sharing resources across institutions and to facilitate further collaborative, scholarly work on remediation in medical education.

Health Policy and
Access
Health policy issues are major concerns to the American people in
general, physicians and health workers, and members of STFM. The 40+
millions uninsured Americans, the growing number of underinsured, the
lack of access for many insured, prescription drug access, and even
oversupply and overdelivery of some types of unproven but profitable
services, are critical and daily concerns for all of us. The Group on
Health Policy and Access seeks to identify the health policy issues of
greatest concern and interest to the family medicine academic community,
represented by STFM. The group will suggest and develop activities for
STFM as and organization and its members as individuals to participate
in regarding these policies. These would include such areas as (a) the
development of curricula for the teaching of health policy issues to
medical students and residents, (b) development of faculty development
materials for teachers, (c) Identification of areas of health policy
research for family physician researchers, (d) Identification of plenary
speakers from STFM Conferences, (e) organization and presentation of
seminars, workshops, and theme days at STFM Meetings. The group will
work to help guide the organization's voice in areas of health policy,
as it works in collaboration with other members of the family medicine
family, other organizations of health professionals, policy makers, and
consumers concerned with these issues, and representatives of federal,
state, and local government.

Hospital Medicine and Procedural Training
A significant percentage of family practice residency
training is done in the hospital setting. Residents
enjoy both procedures and inpatient medicine and many
family physicians continue post residency working part
time in a hospital while keeping up procedural skills. The goal of this group is to: facilitate discussion regarding the teaching and
practice of hospital medicine; discuss the training and practice of procedures,
both inpatient and outpatient; share curricular ideas regarding the teaching of
procedures and hospital medicine; discuss ideas how to promote the utilization of
family physicians in the hospital setting including the emergency department and critical care unit.

Online Cases
Medical education is increasingly competency-based. LCME is requiring comparable educational experience across all clerkship sites and that learners achieve minimum number of patient encounters on specified topics (ED-2). Online cases can be useful tools not only to meet these accreditation requirements, but also to enhance education. This group will work collaboratively to develop and maintain a bank of high quality cases for medical education. The vision is that each member will develop and maintain a few cases, but will have access to a large number of cases through the group.
Goals and Objectives: 1. Provide a STFM group and forum for STFM faculty to work collaboratively on case development 2. Form a support network, through a Listserv and at meetings, to facilitate the sharing of experiences, ideas and best practices for case development 3. Examine the best use of technology and web infrastructure for sharing 4. Develop a peer review process so that cases are high quality and up to date. 5. Provide STFM seminars/workshops to enhance STFM faculty knowledge and skill in online cases 6. Work collaboratively with other groups both within the STFM as well as with other organizations to further our mission.
The group has a listserv. To subscribe, send an email to Martha Seagrave at martha.seagrave@uvm.edu. In the subject line specify Join STFM On-Line Cases. Please include your name, title, name of your institution, email address, phone number and fax number. For more information about the group's listserve, click here.

Pain Management and
Palliative
Care
The Group on Pain Management and Palliative Care serves as a resource for those interested in addressing the complex issues of pain management and palliative care from an education and care perspective. These critically important issues, often underappreciated, may present significant challenges for primary care providers. Also, historically, they have been poorly taught in both medical school and residency training programs.
The group looks to provide background for the enhanced education and training of those in primary care in view of the many patients with pain who may be undertreated and, in effect, underserved. Our work has included curriculum development, educational programs, and contributions to key initiatives regarding pain management and control. Of note, in 2006 we produced an STFM monograph on “Pain Education in Primary Care.” It has been used by several programs for enhanced curriculum development and remains available through the STFM bookstore. Care for those in pain and/or near the end of life has gained a place on the national agenda. The group will continue to support STFM members and others as they work to improve the education of students, residents, fellows, and practicing physicians.

Rural Health
The purpose of the STFM Group on Rural Health is to promote health in rural places through the preparation of more and better rural family physicians. Our objectives in pursuit of this goal are to:
- Grow connections between and among educators who are working to train family physicians for rural health practice
- Ensure a presence at meetings of the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine and create a space at each of these meetings for the discussion of issues in medical education that are uniquely rural, celebrating our successes and in this way encouraging one another in our valuable work
- Establish and strengthen a rural voice in the workings of the major Family Medicine organizations, as well as non-Family Medicine organizations in which we have a stake (e.g. the NRHA, the AAMC)
- Identify active policy issues for rural family medicine education
- Disseminate information relevant to rural medical education
- Clearly articulate an ongoing vision for sustaining and integrating the teaching and practice of rural family medicine
The STFM Group on Rural Health is closely affiliated with the Rural Medical Educators group of the National Rural Health Association, a multi-specialty and interprofessional group of family physicians, internists, general surgeons, educators, researchers, administrators, and others who have become a voice for rural medical education nationally and regionally. Relationships with this organization and other national and international groups with an interest in rural health continue to evolve.

Sports Medicine The role of the Group on Sports Medicine is to be a resource on sports medicine topics for all STFM members.
The group helped develop guidelines for a curriculum in sports medicine and is
now helping programs integrate a longitudinal experience in sports medicine into
residency training. The group is also committed to expanding capacity in primary
care sports medicine, and presents skill workshops at STFM annual meeting sessions
to help build that capacity. The group also brings together researchers in sports
medicine, promotes dissemination of their work, and plans collaborative research
projects. Finally, the group works to inform all STFM members that sports medicine
is an integral part of family medicine, emphasizing active lifestyles, health
promotion, and disease prevention.
