The Group on Pain Management and Palliative Care serves as a resource for those interested in addressing the complex issues of pain management and palliative care from an education and care perspective. These critically important issues, often underappreciated, may present significant challenges for primary care providers. Also, historically, they have been poorly taught in both medical school and residency training programs. The group looks to provide background for the enhanced education and training of those in primary care in view of the many patients with pain who may be undertreated and, in effect, underserved. Our work has included curriculum development, educational programs, and contributions to key initiatives regarding pain management and control. Of note, in 2006 we produced an STFM monograph on "Pain Education in Primary Care," available online at www.fmdrl.org/1870. Care for those in pain and/or near the end of life has gained a place on the national agenda. The group will continue to support STFM members and others as they work to improve the education of students, residents, fellows, and practicing physicians.
