The goal of the Group on the Family in Family Medicine is to promote family systems thinking in research, clinical practice, and teaching. Since the Conference on Families and Health, a key forum for nurturing that goal, was discontinued in 2008, the group has been exploring new and different mechanisms for keeping a focus on the family, in its many manifestations, as the unit of care in family medicine. We’ve been pleased and excited by collaborations with the Group on Behavioral Science, including the development of a fellowship program (www.stfm.org/conferences/bsfsfellowship.cfm) to support new faculty charged with delivering family systems/behavioral science curricula in their programs. Many members of the group continue their collaborative partnerships, providing a focus on resident and student education, with “sister” organizations: The Behavioral Science Forum and The Collaborative Family Healthcare Association. Current projects include development of programming for the annual meeting and development of a survey exploring the current state of affairs regarding the teaching of family systems in residency training.
