Teaching interactions with challenging learners is common at the predoctoral and residency level. Approximately 3% of medical students meet criteria for a learning disability and 7-15% of residents experience academic difficulty. Assessing and remediating these learners consumes considerable, financial, and emotional resources not only for the learner but also for faculty and peers. Nationally, there are few programs designed to assess and remediate the challenging learner. The STFM Group on the Challenging Learner provides an organized forum for collating and sharing resources across institutions and to facilitate further collaborative, scholarly work on remediation in medical education.
