Learners in Academic Difficulty

Teaching interactions with learners in academic difficulty is common at the predoctoral and residency level. Approximately 3% of medical students meet criteria for a learning disability and 7-15% of residents experience academic difficulty. Assessing and remediating these learners consumes considerable, financial, and emotional resources not only for the learner but also for faculty and peers. Nationally, there are few programs designed to assess and remediate the learner in academic difficulty. The STFM Group on Learners in Academic Difficulty provides an organized forum for collating and sharing resources across institutions and to facilitate further collaborative, scholarly work on remediation in medical education.
