Introduction

Leadership in the academic environment is crucial to the success of any discipline. Family medicine is faced with a critical leadership need as we face the challenges of access to and quality of health care today.

The STFM Foundation was created in 1975 to enhance and support the programs of STFM and to answer the needs of the discipline. The STFM Foundation and its programs are critical because they identify and develop leaders who can articulate a new vision for the medical profession. These are the leaders who will step forward to plan and implement the strategies that will bring accessibility and affordability of medical services back in balance with other, more costly high-tech features of our health care system.

Because of these urgent leadership needs, the STFM Foundation has made leadership development its first priority.  Programs are targeted to junior faculty, mid-level faculty and senior faculty to address the career-building skills relevant to each career level.

The Foundation also supports creative, innovative, cutting-edge programs that need funding outside the usual financial channels.  The Group Project Fund was initiated in 2008 to provide funding for educationally related scholarly projects proposed by STFM groups.  This initiative was a direct result of requests from STFM members for support for research and curriculum development.

Who Benefits

Although most of the programs and initiatives funded by the Foundation directly benefit STFM members, their impact is much broader. Medical students, residents, faculty, and family medicine professionals gain from the Foundation’s leadership development success. The Foundation believes that by championing family medicine education, all who pursue its goals and rewards reap the benefits—whether you are teachers, providers, patients, or others in the larger health care community.
