Faculty Enhancement Experience
Inaugurated in 1996-1997, the Faculty
Enhancement Experience provides support for up to a 2-week visit to
outside institutions for family medicine faculty to learn from leaders
at other institutions. The
goal of this award is to enhance leadership, teaching, and/or
administrative skills of mid-career family medicine faculty. Up to four
awards are available per year, depending on the availability of funds
and applicants. The award level is a maximum of $2,000 per individual.
The
applicant and host institution will design an individualized faculty
enhancement program that incorporates planned activities specific to
the applicant's objectives. The program must be at least 2 weeks in
length at the host institution(s). The host institution(s) may be any
institution relevant to the home department or program mission.
Examples of qualified hosts are other departments or teaching programs
in any specialty, other universities, foundation, or government
agencies that are leaders in areas relevant to the selected applicant's
learning goals.
The applicant must be a member of STFM and have a minimum of 3 years of
faculty experience. These funds are not for salary support.
The electronic application must include:
- Letter from applicant's institution verifying that the applicant will be given ample time to participate in the program.
- Applicant's stated objectives for the enhancement experience.
- The planned activities, including how applicant will demonstrate achievement of objectives.
- Letter from host institution stating cooperation and understanding of planned activities.
- Budget request (maximum $2,000) and explanation of intended use of funds. Other sources of funding should be stated.
- Statement
about how applicant meets funding preference, if applicable. Preference
will be given to applicants who are about to undertake or have recently
accepted a new level of responsibility for leadership in predoctoral
education, family medicine residencies, research programs, clinical
practice management, implementing innovations in practice, shaping
strategic institutional policy or leading faculty development programs.
Preference will also be given to applicants who are not eligible for
institutional sabbatical programs.
- Current applicant curriculum vitae.
Successful
applicants must provide a report to the Foundation after the experience
and may be asked to speak about their experience at the Foundation's
annual reception. Attendance at the 2009 STFM Annual Spring Conference
in Denver is expected (at applicant's expense).
The application must be submitted electronically (no faxed submissions allowed) and must be received by August 31, 2008 to:
