Medical Student Educators Development Institute (MSEDI)

The Medical Student Educators Development Institute is a year-long comprehensive learning experience designed to give you skills to advance your career in medical student education. You will forge enduring relationships with other participants as well as the Institute faculty who will support and guide you throughout your professional career.

You can expect to learn these skills and more:

  • Obtaining and managing resources 
  • Grant writing 
  • Curriculum and exam development 
  • Student evaluation 
  • Dealing with difficult students 
  • Recruiting preceptors 
  • Negotiating
  • Directing a clerkship 
  • Winning support from Dean and higher-ups

The Institute includes two 1-day sessions:

Thursday, February 2, 2012 prior to the 2012 Conference on Medical Student Education in Long Beach, CA.
Wednesday, April 25, 2012 prior to the 2012 STFM Annual Spring Conference in Seattle, WA.   
(There are deadlines throughout the year for project completion, submission, and advisor communication.)

Top 10 Tools for Effective Family Medicine Educators (PR1)

This workshop is targeted at junior faculty starting their educational careers and more experienced faculty who want to update their skills as educators. This workshop is presented by the STFM Group on Medical Student Education (GOMSE) and the GOMSE steering committee. The presenters are all family medicine educators and, between them, have a vast accumulated depth of educational experience. The content of the workshop reflects what the GOMSE steering committee membership considers to be the top 10 tools that help a family medicine educator be effective in their role.  

The format will be interactive with brief mini-lectures on 10 topics followed by opportunity to explore and role-play whichever topics most interest individual attendees, in an informal, learner-centered way.

Target Audience: Junior faculty, Residents new to teaching medical students, Faculty wanting to update their knowledge and skill-set.

Learning Objectives:
By the end of this session participants will:

  • Know several recommended strategies for effective clinical teaching.
  • Be familiar with some necessary steps to develop a successful academic career.
  • Understand several important skills in educating medical students.

FMIG Faculty Advisor Summit (PR2)

Co-hosted by: FMIG Network and STFM
Co-Conveners: Wendy Biggs, MD, Ashley Bieck, MPA, Ashley Bentley, MBA, AAFP FMIG Network, American Academy of Family Physicians

STFM and the AAFP invite FMIG Faculty Advisors to participate in this workshop specially designed to help faculty advisors.

Goals and Objectives:

  • Access tools and resources that support FMIGs  and FMIG faculty advisors in their role at medical schools
  • Share knowledge of interventions to increase student interest in family medicine
  • Investigate how community service can increase collaborative campus partnerships and increase participation in FMIG activities
  • Dedicated networking opportunities and dialogue time for FMIG Faculty Advisors
