Leadership. It comes in many different forms and is needed at every level of family medicine education. Leadership helped the Future of Family Medicine project take form. Leadership guides our organizations and has set the pace in faculty development and in the myriad of groups that reflect the interests and activities of STFM members. We wouldn’t be where we are without dedicated leaders. Leadership development has been the focus of efforts of the STFM Foundation for many years. Our programs cover all ranges of faculty, from the New Faculty Scholar Award to the Faculty Enhancement Program to the Bishop Fellowship. We support international leadership development through the AAFP International Consultant Project and the International Scholarship Program. We celebrate our family medicine leaders through the F. Marian Bishop Award and the Leland Blanchard Memorial Lecture. We couldn’t do this without the generous support of our donors. The New Faculty Scholars Program is designed to identify young faculty leaders and provide assistance to attend the STFM Annual Spring Conference. This opportunity will be beneficial to their careers, as they experience the sessions and begin to form their network of colleagues. We have supported 77 New Faculty Scholars to date. Joining us in San Francisco this year are Stephen Brown, MD, Banner Family Medicine Center, Phoenix; Paul Crawford, MD, Eglin Air Force Base, Florida; Edgar Figueroa, MD, MPH, Columbia University; Sarah Parrott, DO, University of Kansas; and Jason Wilbur, MD, University of Iowa. The Faculty Enhancement Program provides support for mini-fellowships for established family medicine educators to learn new skills and to develop new programs with the input of peers at other institutions. We have supported 37 faculty since 1996. Chosen for the 2005–2006 program were Jerry Boland, MD, Florida State University; Scott Counts, MD, Anderson Family Practice, Anderson, SC; and Angela O’Neil, MD, Mayo Medical School. The Bishop Fellowship Program allows mid-career and senior faculty the opportunity to learn about leadership in higher education and learn from a dean at another medical school. We are in the fifth year of this program. Thomas Schwenk, MD (University of Michigan) and William Wadland, MD (Michigan State University) are this year’s Bishop Fellows. Carlos Moreno, MD, MSPH (University of Texas, Houston) will start his program this fall. Program leadership has transitioned, with William Jacott, MD, the first executive director, retiring. Dr Jacott was instrumental in establishing the program and working with Carole Bland, PhD, the program director. Robert Graham, MD, was selected to be the executive director of the program and brings great experience to this role.
The International Scholarship Program supports international educators at the STFM Annual Spring Conference. I was able to witness the work of last year’s scholar, Dr Ludmila Balteanu, during a recent visit to Moldova. She was putting the lessons learned here in the United States to work in establishing a cancer screening program for underserved women in her country while teaching her residents these needed skills. This year’s recipient is Dr Derek Hellenberg from the University of Cape Town in Cape Town, South Africa. We wish him a successful visit and hope that all STFM members will welcome him to the meeting. This year, we honor John Frey III, MD, with the F. Marian Bishop Award. John has long been deeply involved in STFM and in family medicine. He served as STFM Communications Committee chair from 1982–1984 and was president of STFM in 1998–1999. But John’s real contributions have come in his writings and his talks. He served as editor of Family Medicine from 1983–1991. He has been a plenary speaker at many STFM meetings, including the Annual Spring Conference. He just stepped down as chair of the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Wisconsin, serving in that capacity from 1993 to 2006. He was a co-organizer of the Keystone III conference, which led to the Future of Family Medicine project. He has been a Kellogg Fellow and has received the STFM Recognition Award. His thoughtful, gentle questioning has enabled us to ask the hard questions and think about where we are going. He continues to inspire and guide us. The Leland Blanchard Memorial Lecture at the STFM Annual Spring Conference will be given by Barbara Starfield, MD, MPH. Dr Starfield has been a vocal supporter of primary care and its role and importance in providing for the health of communities and nations. We’ve asked her to share her research and inspire us in her plenary talk, “The Challenging Face of Primary Care.” Over the years, the STFM Foundation has asked for your help in supporting these programs. Joseph Scherger, MD, MPH, has served as the chair of the Annual Giving Campaign, which this year brought in more than $70,000. We believe these programs will continue to be needed and again ask for your support in developing this leadership infrastructure. On behalf of the Trustees of the Foundation, I thank you.
