Overview:

The US philanthropic community donated almost 250 billion dollars to worthy causes in 2004 over and above the large amounts of dollars awarded by federal and state agencies interested in health care. We believe that family physicians have been setting their sights too low. There is need to dream big and to raise the funds to support our vision.

This project will prepare family medicine professionals seeking to succeed as vision-driven fundraisers. The preparation involves a two-day workshop that will introduce the skills and knowledge needed to plan and implement a fundraising initiative. An optional one-year intensive fellowship experience will be offered for those who want intensive, on-going support while working towards a defined fundraising goal.

While fundraising is often seen as a “necessary evil,” this program will teach creative ways to understand the world of philanthropy, refine interpersonal skills, handle common problems, and invigorate enthusiasm for fundraising. Fundraising will be understood as a way to fulfill the donor’s interests and desires, while advancing the recipients’ goals and project plans.

This program supports the New Partners Initiative of the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine. Through the New Partners Initiative, the leadership of STFM seeks to create relationships with foundations, corporations, government agencies and groups that share common interests with the family of Family Medicine. To take advantage of these new opportunities, faculty will need the skills and abilities to work with philanthropic organizations.

Target Audience:

  • Mid-career to senior career family medicine faculty responsible for developing financial support for their organizations.
  • Leaders seeking guidance about how to plan a fundraising strategy to finance bold ideas and projects.
  • Faculty members with grant writing skills who want to develop new strategies to support their passions, projects, and interests.

Project Goals:

As a result of participating in this project, participants will be able to:

  • Assess their current knowledge, skills, and abilities as vision-driven fundraisers;
  • Understand the core principles and practices of philanthropic fundraising in our culture;
  • Develop ideas that attract philanthropic support ("funding magnets");
  • Learn how to form a team to support their fundraising goals;
  • Identify the philanthropic priorities of various types of donors;
  • Cultivate and solicit significant gifts for your project(s);
  • Develop proposals that match the donor's interests and needs with a project's goals and objectives;
  • Develop a network of contacts that will produce qualified donor prospects from various markets, i.e., individuals, foundations, corporations, etc.;
  • Manage financial and organizational issues associated with receiving gifts, donations, and grants.
