STFM Resident Teacher Award

The STFM Board of Directors authorized the development of an award to recognize teaching contributions by residents, the STFM Resident Teacher Award. Each family practice residency program can give this award annually to the resident who has best demonstrated an interest, ability, and commitment to family medicine education.

Award Criteria:

  1. The award should be given to a third-year resident, not necessarily the chief resident or someone who is planning to do a fellowship or begin an academic career.

  2. The award should recognize a resident who has demonstrated skills and interests in teaching, as defined in the criteria below.

  3. No more than one award may be given per residency program, but it need not be given each year.

  4. Faculty shall select their program's recipient.

  5. Preference should be given to an STFM member when possible.

Suggested evaluation criteria for selection of the recipient, where applicable:

  • Demonstrated interest in teaching/precepting medical students.

  • Demonstrated interest and excellence in teaching physician assistants, nursing students, pharmacy
    students, etc.

  • Participation in a patient education or residency education committee.

  • Peer teaching.

  • Consistent quality grand rounds and/or conferences presented.

  • Valued as teacher by patients and peers.

  • Evidence of community teaching.

  • Presentations given at regional or national family medicine meetings.

While we realize that not all residency programs provide the full range of teaching opportunities that we have enumerated, we believe the resident recipient should fulfill as many of the criteria as possible to be considered an exemplary future teacher.

If you would like to participate in this program, please complete this FORM and send to Jean Schuler at  jschuler@stfm.org to advise STFM of the resident you have chosen to receive this honor. STFM will mail you a certificate suitable for framing. If you do not have the resident's name at the time of your request, we will simply forward you a blank certificate and you can complete accordingly. You will be responsible for the certificate's presentation of the certificate in an appropriate forum.
