Results From the 2018 Member Survey

October 12, 2018—In preparation for strategic planning and as part of general operations, STFM sent an online survey to members to assess members’ satisfaction with STFM and to gauge their needs and recommendations for priorities for the organization.

Most members reported they were satisfied with their STFM membership and are likely to recommend membership to a colleague. They also highly rated STFM resources, particularly the conferences, the journals, and the STFM Resource Library. Key takeaways from the survey are included below.

Top Priorities

Members were asked to indicate their top priorities for the association. Priorities were ranked as follows:
  • Professional development of members (faculty development)—43%
  • Leadership training of family medicine educators—37%
  • Wellness/burnout—37%
  • Political advocacy to increase the number of family medicine residency positions to meet the physician workforce needs of the United States—35%

Biggest Challenge

Members were asked an open-ended question about their biggest current challenge. The overwhelming response—particularly from those at university-based residency programs—was workload/administrative burden/competing priorities. Many commented that they did not have adequate protected time for teaching.
