2016 STFM Student Scholars Announced

September 29, 2015—The Society of Teachers of Family Medicine is pleased to announce its selection for the STFM Conference on Medical Student Education Student Scholarship Award. This award highlights students who demonstrate promise as an educator, advocate, or scholar in family medicine. Each student will receive a $500 scholarship, STFM membership, and a complimentary registration to attend the STFM Conference on Medical Student Education. The target school student—a student at a school without a family medicine department—will receive an additional $500 in scholarship funds which is provided by the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP).

The 2016 STFM Student Scholars are:

  • Jana Baatenberg, Michigan State University
  • Harry “Buddy” Blanke, Medical University of South Carolina
  • Julie Blaszczak, University of Michigan
  • Mandy Ward Boltz, University of Arizona College of Medicine
  • Margaret Chen, University of California at Los Angeles
  • Edward Elchico, Rush Medical College
  • Jessica Friedman, Duke School of Medicine
  • Madeline Haas, Albany Medical College
  • Katie Hinderaker, University of Minnesota
  • Shira Lerner, Case Western Reserve University
  • Suzanne Meredith-Giunta, Virginia Commonwealth University
  • Christina Olson-Cronk, University of North Carolina
  • Teresa Pan, University of Kansas Medical Center
  • Cory Pollard, University of Florida
  • Diana Wohler, Harvard Medical School (target school winner)
  • Jean Yau, Baylor College of Medicine

The 16 scholars were chosen from a pool of 32 applicants by the STFM Medical Student Education Committee. The scholars were nominated by their faculty member and submitted both a personal statement and an abstract for a poster presentation. They will present their poster  and receive recognition at the 2016 STFM Conference on Medical Student Education, January 28-31 in Phoenix, AZ.

The Medical Student Education Committee would like to thank the 2015 Conference on Medical Student Education attendees who generously donated $5,500 to the STFM Foundation to support this program, STFM for its ongoing support of 4 scholarships, and the AAFP for its support of the target school scholar.
