STFM Seeks Student and Resident Representatives to the STFM Board

May 23, 2016—STFM is seeking the next Student and Resident Representatives to serve on the STFM Board of Directors. The Resident and Student Representatives to the STFM Board are elected by their peers on July 30 at the AAFP National Conference for family medicine residents and medical students  in Kansas City, MO.

Board terms for Resident and Student Representatives are 1 year, from September 1, 2016–August 31, 2017. Representatives:

  • Attend board meetings and present the student or resident perspectives and pertinent issues
  • Make regular reports to the board
  • Serve as the coordinator of requests for student or resident representation into committees, task forces, or other groups
  • Make an annual report to the National Conference of Family Medicine Residents and Medical Students

In addition to the duties listed above, the Student Representative serves on the Medical Student Education Committee, and the Resident Representative serves on the Graduate Medical Education Committee.

The Student and Resident Representatives are also encouraged to pursue education-focused projects. A Past Resident Representative Esther Johnson, MD, held a 90-minute webinar to give tips to third-year residents on how to search for their first teaching job, select a faculty setting, choose a focus, and build their career path. Other representatives have written blog posts on topics meaningful to them.

Students and residents interested in running for these positions must be present at the AAFP National Conference to receive nominations and to be elected. For more information about the election process, visit the resident and student positions pages at AAFP.org. For questions about the position, students and residents can contact the current STFM representatives.
