Stephen Wilson, MD, MPH, to Speak on Delivering High Quality Feedback

March 30, 2015—Stephen Wilson, MD, MPH, will take the main stage on Wednesday, April 29 at the 2015 STFM Annual Spring Conference to present “Bettering Ourselves to Better Our Learners: Applying Feedback Lessons From Apples, Angels, PTSD, Stallone, and Ronda Rousey.”

In his talk, Dr Wilson will teach attendees how to give high quality, effective feedback and reliable assessment. Attendees will also learn how to recognize key disruptors of delivering feedback and will leave the session with ideas on how to improve learner assessment at their home program or institution.

Dr Wilson was chosen as Wednesday’s general session speaker because of his extensive knowledge of feedback and direct observation. “STFM has identified learner assessment as a key area of focus for faculty development,” says STFM Executive Director Stacy Brungardt. “Providing effective feedback is a critical component of assessment.”

Dr Wilson's research and presentations have focused on learner assessment. He has research articles published in Family Medicine and past conference presentations archived in the STFM Resource Library about the effects of direct observation and feedback on students and residents.

He also has a longstanding history of involvement in STFM and faculty development. “For many years, Dr Wilson has been a tremendous asset to both STFM and family medicine,” explains Mrs Brungardt. “Whether he's engaging in STFM Board discussions, leading the STFM Program Committee, or serving as an On the Road faculty member, he provides thoughtful insight, creative ideas, and expert facilitation.”

Dr Wilson is the director of the University of Pittsburgh Family Medicine Faculty Development Fellowship and director of Medical Decision Making for the UPMC St. Margaret Family Medicine Residency. He serves as a member-at-large on the STFM Board of Directors. Dr Wilson’s medical practice is at Lincoln-Lemington Family Health Care Center in Pittsburgh, PA.
