Scholarship Recipients to Get Vital Advocacy Training at the Family Medicine Advocacy Summit
February 13, 2017—The Society of Teachers of Family Medicine has awarded scholarships for five new faculty members to attend the Family Medicine Advocacy Summit. Scholarship recipients were chosen based on their potential to be exceptional advocates and advocacy leaders within STFM and the broader academic family medicine community. The recipients are:
  • Sarah Coles, MD,  Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center FMR, Phoenix, AZ
  • Katie Freeman, MD,  University of Minnesota/St Joseph's Hospital, St Paul, MN
  • Manasa Irwin, MD, Forbes Hospital, Pittsburgh, PA
  • John Nguyen, MD, Valley Medical Center, Renton, WA
  • Sarah Stumbar, MD, MPH, Florida International University Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine

This is the 5th year of the scholarship program. These scholarships help to cover the cost of attendance, travel, and meals for each recipient. Recipients will join conference attendees in learning about the legislative process, current priorities for family medicine, and how they can take action and interact with legislators and health care leaders. Each recipient will also be connected to a mentor who will guide them as they prepare for the conference.

The Family Medicine Advocacy Summit will take place May 22-23, 2017 in Washington, DC. For more information about the conference, visit
