Juan Robles, MD, Receives H. Winter Griffith Resident Scholarship for Excellence in Practice Improvement and Patient-Centered Care

December 5, 2014—Juan Robles, MD, was named the recipient of the 2014 H. Winter Griffith Resident Scholarship for Excellence in Practice Improvement and Patient-Centered Care at the Conference on Practice Improvement in Tampa, FL. This annual scholarship recognizes excellence in practice improvement involving patient-centered care by an outstanding family medicine resident.

Dr Robles was nominated for his weight loss and healthy lifestyles support group project, where in less than 1 year participants lost a cumulative 108 pounds and adopted healthier lifestyles.

“Essentially we have created a safe space where individuals from our practice and community can engage, educate, and empower each other in this very important health issue,” explains Dr Robles. “Initially people were very interested in this idea but skeptical about its sustainability and effectiveness. It took some time to build momentum; our success has motivated others to engage in this team effort.”

Thirty-three support group sessions, that were free of charge, were held February-November in 2013. There was a positive “dose-response” relationship between the number of sessions attended and the number of pounds lost. Dr Robles presented on these positive results at the conference and was recognized during the award presentation.

When asked how he felt about receiving the award, he said “I couldn't believe it! I felt honored to be the recipient of this scholarship. My program director was very happy, too!"

Dr Robles is a co-chief resident at the Residency Program in Social Medicine-Family Medicine at Montefiore Medical Center in Bronx, NY. The success of his project has encouraged his fellow residents to consider developing other group-based interventions focusing on prevention and treatment of chronic diseases and mental health.

The Conference on Practice Improvement is held annually by the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine. The next conference will be December 3-6 in Dallas, TX. For more information, visit stfm.org/cpi.
