STFM Seeks Student and Resident Representatives to the STFM Board

May 30, 2014—STFM is seeking the next Student and Resident Representatives to serve on the STFM Board of Directors. The Resident and Student Representatives to the STFM Board are elected by their peers at the AAFP National Conference for family medicine residents and medical students, August 7-9 in Kansas City, MO.

Board terms for Resident and Student Representatives are 1 year, from September 1, 2014–August 31, 2015, and can be renewed for a second year. Representatives:

  • Attend board meetings and present the student or resident perspectives and pertinent issues
  • Make regular reports to the board
  • Serve as the coordinator of requests for student or resident representation into committees, task forces, or other groups
  • Make an annual report to the National Conference of Family Medicine Residents and Medical Students

In addition to the duties listed above, the Student Representative serves on the Medical Student Education Committee, and the Resident Representative serves on the Graduate Medical Education Committee.

The Student and Resident Representatives are also encouraged to pursue education-focused projects. The current Resident Representative Esther Johnson, MD, held a 90-minute webinar to give tips to third-year residents on how to search for their first teaching job, select a faculty setting, choose a focus, and build their career path.

Representatives also benefit from a year of mentoring by leaders in family medicine education. “I am deeply grateful to STFM for the professional development and learning opportunities given to me as Student Representative,” writes Student Representative Melissa Robinson. “I strongly urge other students to run for this position!”

Students and residents interested in running for these positions must be present at the AAFP National Conference to receive nominations and to be elected. For more information about the election process, visit the resident and student positions pages at AAFP.org. For questions about the position, students and residents can contact the current STFM representatives.
