New Faculty Scholars Program

This program is designed to be a catalyst for developing future leaders in STFM and other areas of academic family medicine. The program provides funding to send 10 participants to the STFM Annual Spring Conference. These New Faculty Scholars must be STFM members who have served at least 2 years but no more than 4 years as full-time faculty and who exhibit outstanding leadership potential. Since its inception in 1988, this program has supported the attendance of 143 new faculty at this conference. Attendance at national meetings is one way to help develop leaders and leadership skills.

NEW! Dedicated Funding for Underrepresented in Medicine Faculty

Thanks to generous support from donors to the Underrepresented in Medicine Campaign, the STFM Foundation is able to provide additional mentoring and scholarship opportunities to contribute to a diverse family medicine workforce. This year, additional dedicated funding is available for underrepresented in medicine faculty applicants for the New Faculty Scholars Program. The Association of American Medical Colleges defines underrepresented in medicine as: “those racial and ethnic populations that are underrepresented in the medical profession relative to their numbers in the general population.” 

Program Elements

As a New Faculty Scholar, you'll receive: 

  • Up to $1,000 in travel and hotel expenses, as well as funding for the registration fees to attend the STFM Annual Spring Conference 
  • Advising—a seasoned coach will be assigned to help you become a leader in STFM
  • Networking—interact and expand your professional network with STFM leaders and members
  • Scholarly activity—present a session at the STFM Annual Spring Conference
  • Recognition—be recognized at special events, such as the STFM Foundation Reception


"The STFM New Faculty Scholars program has given me the opportunity to engage in STFM in a way that has enhanced my personal growth and knowledge and also allowed me to contribute in a meaningful way to conversations about medical education at my home institution and on a national stage. As a New Faculty Scholar I was able to attend the STFM Annual Spring Conference where I was provided multiple opportunities to network with members of STFM at all levels. Those connections resulted directly in the opportunities I have had over the last several years.  I was invited to serve on the STFM Medical Student Education Conference Steering Committee, and was fortunate to be the chair of the 2016 MSE Conference. I have transitioned into the role of the National Clerkship Curriculum Editorial Board Chair. Those early connections have developed into strong relationships with colleagues, mentors, and friends."

Eligibility Criteria

The applicant must:

  1. Be a current member of STFM. Preference will be given to individuals who have shown active engagement in STFM. This could be demonstrated by actively participating in an STFM collaboration and/or presenting at an STFM conference. These should be noted on the applicant's biosketch.
  2. Be a faculty member (at least .8 FTE) at a family medicine department or family medicine residency program and employed in academic family medicine for a minimum of 2 years and no more than 4 years at time of application deadline.
  3. Not currently be a full-time fellow. Applicants may be enrolled in part-time fellowships if they are faculty (see item 2, above).
  4. Not be a current member of a board of directors or standing committee of STFM, the North American Primary Care Research Group, or the Association of Family Medicine Residency Directors.
  5. Agree to the expectations below at the STFM Annual Spring Conference that scholars are attending as a result of the award:
    • Present a session. (If the scholar’s presentation was not accepted through the call for papers process, the scholar will present at a breakfast roundtable.)
    • Attend all designated Foundation functions for New Faculty Scholars.
  6. Respond to a survey regarding their New Faculty Scholars activities following the conference and 2 years following receipt of the award.

Application Requirements

Applications are due October 16. Applicants should complete the items below and email the documents to Pat Lodge.

  1. A completed application form (Word).
  2. The applicant’s biosketch (included in the application form) and photo. The biosketch should be a maximum of 2 pages. The biosketch must include (a) educational background, (b) relevant academic and clinical work history, (c) a list of no more than five publications and/or presentations at professional conferences, and (d) a list of leadership positions (briefly describe if not self-explanatory) held in local, regional, or national organizations.
  3. A letter from the applicant’s chair or program director stating (a) the applicant’s potential for career advancement and leadership in academic family medicine, (b) the department’s or program’s assurance that the applicant, if selected, will fulfill all New Faculty Scholar expectations (see item 5 above),(c) the department or program will provide financial support beyond the awarded $1,000 to cover the applicant’s travel expenses to the conference.

Not only was I able to go to the conference, but I was also able to network with a variety of people in the academic realm, present to my peers and colleagues on a topic that has been near and dear to my heart, and also attend sessions to learn about the great strides of family medicine in academia. I learned so much about leadership, development, and scholarship. Being in a cohort and being able to share ideas and information to take back was amazing.
