Chair's Message

Welcome!

On behalf of the conference committee, it is my pleasure to invite you to join a group of like-minded individuals, passionate about medical student education, at the annual STFM Conference on Medical Student Education. The conference will be held in Jacksonville, FL at the Hyatt Regency Riverfront Hotel January 31 – February 3, 2019.

As family physicians, we strive to fill our communities’ most salient, immediate health care needs. Family physicians often confront these needs head-on through providing care for medically underserved populations, who, without the care of family physicians and their teams, would be unable to access the medical care they need. At the 2019 STFM Conference on Medical Student Education, I am confident that you will have the ability to explore topics related to health care equity and access, and to network with other family medicine educators.

Attending this conference each year renews my excitement about the future of family medicine and our ability to inspire and mentor students to champion family medicine. As always, this conference seeks to connect educators interested in collaborating, to share educational innovations, to demonstrate to students the relevance and prescience of academic medicine, and to support the development of our coordinators both in their own communities and in the realm of academic medicine more broadly. In short, this conference will not disappoint.

Every year, more students and coordinators attend the Conference, and I would like to see this trend continue in Jacksonville. To those of you returning to this conference, I appreciate your continued dedication to educating the next generation of physician-scholars.To those attending for the first time this year, welcome aboard. I encourage you all to nominate a student scholar and find support for the coordinator who makes your work easier. It is my hope that through engagement, dialogue, and a shared dedication to academic medicine and community excellence, we will help our future colleagues in the most effective and powerful ways available. Our work is urgently needed and hugely rewarding, and my excitement about this conference is greater than ever.

I look forward to seeing you there.
