Poetry and Prose Contest

The STFM Ethics and Humanities Collaborative is excited to announce the 2017 STFM Annual Poetry and Prose Contest. The theme of this year's contest is: "A patient story or family medicine moment that inspired you."

Entries are limited to one entry for each category, poetry and prose.

  • Prose can be in the form of a story, narrative, or essay and must be limited to 1000 words (going beyond the word count will result in being disqualified).
  • Poetry can be in the form of a poem, haiku, or 55-word story.

You can submit a previously published work but not one that has won the STFM contest. We encourage students, residents and faculty to submit.

First and second place will be awarded for each category. The first place prize is $100, and the second place prize is $50. Winning pieces will be on display at the 2017 STFM Annual Spring Conference and awardees will have the opportunity to read their works at the Annual Poetry and Prose Reading at the conference. Awardees will also be assisted in submitting their work, if unpublished, for publication in Family Medicine.

To be entered into the competition, send your entries as a Word file (not pdf) to Hugh Silk, MD, MPH at hugh.silk@umassmed.edu. Entries are due by 5 pm on March 15.
