The Society of Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM) is an association of nearly 5,000 innovative family medicine educators. These teachers include medical school professors, preceptors, residency program faculty, residency program directors and others involved in family medicine education.
The STFM administrative offices are housed with the American Academy of Family Physicians in Leawood, Kansas. Two advocacy staff have offices in Washington, DC.
STFM was founded in 1967.
Advancing family medicine to improve health through a community of teachers and scholars
To become the indispensable academic home for every family medicine educator
Transforming health care through education
The STFM Board of Directors implemented a strategic planning process in 2011 that resulted in the development of a 3-year plan and a process for assessing, updating, adding, and removing programs. In 2014, the Board charged the Strategic Planning Committee with updating the plan to guide the organization over the next 5 years. This process involved research that included a member needs assessment, membership focus groups, and the Family Medicine for America’s Health (FMAHealth) strategic and communications plans. The Strategic Planning Committee held extensive discussions, obtained ongoing input from the Board, and developed this updated plan. The 2015-2019 STFM strategic plan will guide the organization over the next 5 years, taking it to a higher level of value for members.
